Our Breast Reconstruction Process
Implant vs Tissue-Based Options
An implant-based reconstruction uses silicone or saline implants to restore volume and shape, and can be done immediately after mastectomy or as a delayed procedure. Tissue-based procedures like DIEP flap may produce a more natural look and feel. We’ll help you choose the right option for your goals.
Timing Your Procedure
A staged reconstruction involves multiple breast surgeries over time, whereas a direct-to-implant (DTI) procedure is a single surgery, performed immediately after a mastectomy. Dr. Harris will explain your options and guide you in making the best decision for your personal situation.
Undergoing the Surgery
Dr. Harris will meticulously shape your skin and recreate the breast mound using either implants or tissue-based techniques for a symmetrical, balanced result. We perform this surgery at the hospital under general anesthesia. Once completed, you can return to your home to start your recovery.
Ongoing Support as You Heal
Many women can resume light activities a few weeks after breast reconstruction surgery, and have fully healed after 1-2 months. We’ll schedule follow-up appointments to check you’re comfortable and make sure your healing process is as smooth as possible. If you have any concerns, we’re only a call away.

At Harris Plastic Surgery, we’ve helped hundreds of women regain their sense of self with breast reconstruction. Take a look at our breast reconstruction before and after gallery to see real results from other women in New York City.
Is Breast Reconstruction Right For Me?
Breast reconstruction is a highly personal decision, and the “right” choice depends on your health, treatment plan, and how you feel about your body after surgery. You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have undergone or will undergo mastectomy, lumpectomy, or breast trauma repair
- Are in good overall health and cleared by your medical team for surgery
- Want to restore breast shape, symmetry, and contour
- Prefer a balanced silhouette both in and out of clothing
Your consultation is the best time to discuss your options, learn more about the breast reconstruction process, and decide whether this procedure is right for you.
