Our Approach to Breast Reconstruction

Our approach to breast reconstruction is entirely individualized. The surgical plan we create depends on whether you’ve already had breast surgery and whether radiation was involved (this affects the timing and type of reconstruction). Dr. Harris offers both implant-based and tissue-based breast reconstructions, and will help you choose the most appropriate strategy based on your anatomy and desired outcome.

Understanding the Timing of Your Breast Reconstruction

There are two main options regarding the timing of your procedure. You can either have a staged reconstruction, which involves multiple surgeries over time, or a direct-to-implant (DTI) reconstruction, which is performed immediately after the mastectomy to ensure no gaps without any breasts.

In rare circumstances, a delayed approach to breast reconstruction will be considered, and the mastectomy will be performed without reconstruction on the same day. Dr. Harris will help you understand your options and give you the information you need to make the best decision for you.

Hear From Our Breast Reconstruction Patients

“Dr. Harris and his team are very informative, thorough, and compassionate. They went above and beyond to help with out-of-network insurance approval.

My breast reconstruction after breast cancer was explained in detail, and Dr. Harris always took the time to answer all of my questions. He is one of the most caring doctors that I know. He is also a perfectionist. Joanne is the office manager and is very resourceful and accommodating. The medical assistant is also very informative, and she makes you feel very comfortable. I highly recommend Dr. Harris and his team.”
“In 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and my surgeon recommended that I see Dr. Stephen Harris. I found the staff to be friendly and very accommodating. Joanne, Dr. Harris's Office Manager, dealt with the Insurance Company for me and handled all the complicated paperwork. She was a Godsend. Dr. Harris was wonderful.

He is easy to talk to and takes all the time you need to answer the 100 questions you have. I was a little nervous because my operation was scheduled for the end of June & my daughter was getting married at the beginning of August. Dr. Harris promised to have me up & well and looking beautiful in my "Mother of the Bride" gown. He fulfilled his promise and I've been back to see him every year since the Wedding for my annual checkup. You will not find a more compassionate, friendly Surgeon than Dr. Stephen Harris.”
“Dr. Harris is my knight in shining armor. After having a staph infection and being hospitalized he came in to tell me that my implant, that was just put in 6mths before due to breast cancer, needed to be removed. Dr Harris took me under his wing and I've been with him since; great bedside manner, I feel like he can relate to what I was going through.”
